Clear aligners are the preferred orthodontic treatment among teens and adults because they are discreet and convenient. You won’t have to worry about brackets and wires drawing attention to your teeth. Although you’ll be able to see your aligners while they are in your hand, they are virtually undetectable when worn over your teeth. However, they can discolor if you aren’t careful. Here are 8 tips you need to know to maintain your aligners.

  1. Remove Them When Eating and Drinking

Clear aligners are durable but don’t eat while wearing them, so they don’t break. It’s best to take them out when having anything except water to prevent damaging or staining your aligners.

  1. Continue to Brush and Floss

Good oral hygiene is more important than ever. Besides brushing in the morning and at night, clean your teeth after eating and before putting your aligners in your mouth. Brushing and flossing will ensure there aren’t any food particles or bacteria trapped between your enamel and the aligners.

  1. Clean Your Aligners

Clean your aligners at least twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear hand soap or dishwashing liquid. You can also purchase cleaning kits designed for clear aligners.

  1. Drink Plenty of Water

Healthcare professionals recommend drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily to stay hydrated. However, it’s also important to keep your mouth moist and clean to combat harmful oral bacteria.

  1. Don’t Expose Your Aligners to Heat

Avoid holding hot liquids in your mouth while wearing your aligners and never run them under hot water because they can warp.

  1. Rinse Your Aligners Every Time You Remove Them

If you can’t get to your toothbrush, rinse your aligners with water every time you take them out of your mouth.

  1. Soak Your Aligners Daily

Besides brushing your aligners, place them in a soaking solution daily to kill any bacteria left behind by your toothbrush.

  1. Don’t Leave Your Aligners Out in the Open

Never place your aligners on your plate, lunch tray, or napkin when eating to prevent misplacing them. Instead, carry their storage case with you to keep them in a safe, clean place when they aren’t in your mouth.

Besides keeping your aligners clean, make sure you are wearing them for at least 22 hours per day. Switch to the next set of aligners on time to prevent unnecessary delays while on your journey to a straight smile. Don’t forget to visit your dentist regularly to monitor the progression of your treatment.

In no time at all, you’ll have a healthy, beautiful smile that you’ll be proud to share with the world.
